Monterey County sheriff's Sgt. Keith Wingo said the boys, ages 16 and 17, went missing around 11:30 a.m. while diving with 17 others.

The Monterey Fire Department joined the U.S. Coast Guard to search for the boys, who were found dead a short time later.

Authorities said the earliest the teens' identities would be released would be today, when autopsies are planned.

The Reno Gazette-Journal reported that the boys were sophomores at Carson High School in Carson City, Nev., and were taking an oceanography class.
